Cunning Plan
Steve Gilmore (c) 2015

Ever since he was old enough to walk
Edward Brown learned the dignity of work
And when he grew older and joined the throng
He could see a system that could do no wrong

So he worked and he saved, and he paid his tax
Got married, had kids and even bought a flat
Never enough money, never enough time
To get it all done before he was old and blind

Where is the justice in what you do
Where is the decency between your crew
Where is redemption in your scheme of things
Like magpies, all you see is the bling

The years rolled by and his plans expand
Cars and holidays on the fat of the land
Then one day it all screeched to an end
When the pension plan floated round the bend

His company went bust and his wife got sick
Insurance ran out because they never miss a trick
So now he's working for minimum wage
Holding down his anger and impotent rage

Where is the justice in what you do
Where is the decency between you two
Where is redemption in your scheme of things
Like magpies, all you see is the bling
Where is the truth in all your lies
Those to yourself and the world outside

Now he's done, can't take any more
Heart and soul lower than the floor
Can't see the point in going on
When all his grand plans keep going wrong
